SURGERY FOR PRESBYOPIA
One of the more exciting areas of ophthalmology is the surgical treatment of presbyopia-the stiffening of the natural lens that decreases near vision as we age. A number of new devices are under investigation, including replacement lenses that are intended to flex like the natural lens and methods of strengthening the muscles that pull on the lens. To date, all of these devices have problems and limitations, but the problems are being slowly addressed. It is likely that, in the next ten to fifteen years, a good treatment for presbyopia will be available. Having LASIK now will not disqualify you from having these treatments in the future.
