Your consultation is your opportunity to become fully in formed about LASIK and decide whether or not the procedure is right for you. You will learn about the strengths and limitations of the procedure as it applies to your eyes. Often a comprehensive examination of your eyes will be done at the initial visit to ensure that you are a good candidate. At some point in the process, you should get to know the surgeon and have the opportunity to ask as many questions as necessary in order to feel safe and comfortable undergoing LASIK. Many patients prefer to invite a friend, their spouse, or another family member to sit in on the meeting with the surgeon. He or she may help you remember questions to ask or may help you recall information later.

Before surgery, the surgeon should take the opportunity to get to know you, gain an understanding of your expectations, and do an examination of your eyes. After a comprehensive examination of your eyes, the surgeon should be able to tell whether you are a good candidate for LASIK and what your outcome will likely be.

Unfortunately, some LASIK centers use a high-pressure sales approach, almost like selling used cars. There is some chance that these centers may recommend LASIK even if you are not a good candidate. We recommend that if you feel you are getting a sales job, you should leave and go elsewhere. LASIK is fundamentally a medical procedure and should be treated as such.
