Where do I even start?
I'm a U. S. Marine and have been stuck wearing contacts for about 10 years. Glasses never worked for me, and in the field I'd constantly deal with eye infections because of unhygienic conditions. It wasn't sustainable for my health or my wallet. The idea of waking up and seeing clearly without fumbling for contacts felt like a dream -- so I finally decided to pursue LASIK.
When I started researching, I knew I wanted two things: the newest technology and a doctor I could trust. I looked into Wavelight Plus LASIK and learned not every practice offers it since it requires a big investment. That narrowed the field. Then came the hard part: finding the right surgeon in LA, where Instagram is full of ""celebrity"" eye doctors. I met with a few of those offices and hated the high-pressure, money-driven vibe. One even wanted to charge $350 just for a consult, with no refund if I wasn't a candidate. It felt wrong.
A friend recommended Dr. Hura, calling him ""the best in the game."" From my very first call, I knew this place was different. The staff was genuinely kind, not pushy. Scheduling was simple, NO CONSULTATION FEE! At my consultation, multiple staff members greeted me, offered me snack, and actually made me feel comfortable -- a total contrast from my other experiences. I spoke with Dr. Hura directly, which other offices wouldn't even allow. He was down-to-earth, patient with all my detailed questions, and confident without being dismissive.
Pricing was also more reasonable than the ""big name"" places I'd visited, especially given they use the newest Wavelight Plus Lasik platform. Luis, the financial manager, walked me through everything and even offered complimentary Uber rides if needed. It was five-star service all the way.
Surgery day came, and Dr. Hura made it easy. He talked to me throughout the procedure, calming my nerves. At one point he asked me, ""What's your favorite thing to do when you come back from deployment?"" I told him my tradition was to hit In-N-Out, and he even asked what my go-to order was. Ten minutes later, surgery was over -- no pain at all.
The next day at my follow-up, I was shocked. After the exam, Dr. Hura walked in holding two In-N-Out bags -- with my exact order from the day before. He told me he appreciated my service and wanted to send me off right before I went overseas. That level of thoughtfulness floored me. It's honestly the top ten kindest things someone has ever done for me, and it showed how much he truly listens and cares about his patients.
And it didn't stop there. The office also surprised me with a really nice Hydro Flask gift bag, -- super useful btw. It might sound small, but after months of dealing with cold, transactional LASIK offices, this kind of care and attention to detail stands out. Everyone in that office -- from reception to the optometrists, to Luis, to Dr. Hura himself -- genuinely seems to love what they do, and you can feel it the moment you walk in.
The aftercare has been just as excellent. I had his personal number in case I needed anything (which I did -- he immediately sent a new prescription when I lost one of my drops). The office is upbeat, the team is warm, and the follow-up schedule is thorough (1 week, 3 months, 6 months). Knowing I can always reach out directly if something comes up gives me real peace of mind.
It's been a month now, and my vision is crystal clear -- better than I imagined. No more infections, no more contacts, no more hassle. I feel like a new man. Being able to wake up and see the world sharply every day has completely changed my life.
Dr. Hura and his team run one of the most professional, genuine, and patient-centered practices I've ever experienced in medicine. From start to finish, it was world-class care mixed with a very human touch. If you're considering LASIK, do your research like I did -- but save yourself the stress and go see Dr. Hura. You'll be glad you did, and you'll probably walk away with not just great vision but also a story you'll tell for the rest of your life.
