ABOUT THE AUTHORS
ERNEST W. KORNMEHL, MD
Ernest W. Kornmehl, MD, FACS, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and the medical director of the Kornmehl Laser Eye Associates, in Boston. He completed his ophthalmology residency and chief residency at the Yale Eye Center, Yale School of Medicine, followed by a Heed fellowship in corneal surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. He also served as director of the Novatec Laser Surgery Program for Nearsightedness at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kornmehl is a clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School, an associate clinical professor of ophthalmology at the Tufts School of Medicine, and a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Kornmehl has taught surgery for nearsightedness and astigmatism at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) since 1987. He is a recipient of the AAO Honor Award and Senior Achievement Award for his numerous scientific presentations and instruction courses, is listed as a top LASIK surgeon and ophthalmologist by Boston magazine's Top Doctors issue, has been selected by his peers to be listed in Best Doctors in America, and in Castle and Connolly's America's Top Doctors.
He serves as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a past president of the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and has served as president of Boston Aid to the Blind. Dr. Kornmehl has served as a member of the Patient Education Committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was an appointee by the governor of Massachusetts to the Commission for the Blind.
Dr. Kornmehl is the developer of the Kornmehl LASIK System, specialized instruments used worldwide during the LASIK procedure. Dr. Kornmehl is also codeveloper of the S-K (Swinger-Kornmehl) solution, which is used to reduce corneal swelling.
Dr. Kornmehl lectures nationally and internationally, is the author of numerous scientific publications and chapters in textbooks, and serves on the editorial boards of Ophthalmology Times and EyeNet, an official publication of the AAO. He has received several research grants from the National Institutes of Health, has participated as a principal investigator in FDA clinical trials, and has developed a method of transforming skin into corneal tissue.
Dr. Kornmehl has been quoted in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Health News/New England Journal of Medicine, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, Vogue, Business Week, People magazine, Reader's Digest, Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, Mademoiselle, Prevention magazine, Men's Health, Fitness, More magazine, and USA Today.
